Iowa State Takes Down North Dakota in Five, 13-2
WICHITA, Kan. – Iowa State recovered from a Friday loss with a five-inning 13-2 win over North Dakota at the Shocker Softball Classic on Saturday. The Cyclones’ second game that was supposed to take place Saturday against UMKC was cancelled due to inclement weather. ISU is now 15-5 on the season.
Story of the Game
After conceding a 1-0 lead in the top of the first, Iowa State looked to be in business to get back in control of the game by loading the bases with no outs. However, UND was able to get out of the jam with three consecutive outs.
North Dakota was not able to get away with it in the second inning as the Cyclones exploded for eight runs. Sara Rice started the scoring with an RBI-double to right-center that scored Jorden Spendlove and tied the game. ISU loaded the bases with no outs when Megan McGuire came in to pinch hit for Sarah Hawryluk. The freshman drew a walk that scored Rice and put ISU ahead 2-1. After an out, Aly Cappaert brought home two more via an error at second base to make it 4-1 for the Cyclones.
Lexi Slater made the score 5-1 with an RBI-single and Rachel Hartman followed that with a sacrifice fly to make it 6-1. Another error by North Dakota during Rice’s second at-bat of the inning brought home Slater for a 7-1 lead and ISU closed out the inning with Spendlove scoring her second run of the inning on a passed ball.
After Stacy Roggentien, making her first career start, retired the UND side in the top of the third Iowa State was back to work at the plate. Brittany Gomez and Hawryluk both singled and stole bases to allow Sara Davison to drive in Gomez to make it 9-1. With two outs in the inning, Hartman drove in her second run of the game with an RBI-single to left for a 10-1 lead.
The Cyclones were back on the attack in the fourth with Spendlove and Rice getting on with a single and double, respectively. They were brought home in the next two at bats by Maddie Reese on a sacrifice fly and Brittany Gomez on an RBI-single to up the lead to 12-1. Davison posted another RBI with a single to right.
Player of the Game
Brittany Gomez. Iowa State’s All-Big 12 centerfielder dominated proceedings today. The sophomore finished the day 4-for-4 at the plate, her second time in the last eight days going 4-for-4 after doing it against Harvard last Saturday. It was her fourth-career four-hit game. Gomez also tied a career high with three runs and set a career high with her four stolen bases on the day.
Honorable mention to Stacy Roggentien, as the junior posted a her first career complete game in her first start as a Cyclone en route to earning her first win.
Iowa State will close out the Shocker Softball Classic tomorrow against the hosts, Wichita State at 3 p.m.
