Cyclone Notebook
- In what turned out to be one of the most successful seasons in school history, Iowa State went 28-8 and for just the second time in school history (95-97), the Cyclones advanced to their third-straight NCAA Tournament. The Cyclones finished 11-7 in Big 12 play, finishing in a tie for third in the league standings.
- The highlight of the season came at the Sprint Center in Kansas City when ISU won its second Big 12 Tournament title by defeating Kansas State and Kansas, along with Baylor in the championship game. Senior DeAndre Kane was named the tournament’s most valuable player, while fellow senior Melvin Ejim and sophomore Georges Niang earned spots on the all-tournament team.
- Iowa State earned a No. 3 seed in the NCAA Tournament and was sent to San Antonio where it defeated North Carolina Central in the second round. It came at a significant cost as Georges Niang, an All-Big 12 third-team selection, suffered a broken right foot and missed the remainder of the tournament. The Cyclones rallied and beat North Carolina in the third round before falling to eventual national champion UCONN at Madison Square Garden in the Sweet 16.
- The Cyclones beat a school-record nine teams (9-3) that were ranked in the Associated Press top 25. The Cyclones opened the season 14-0, breaking the school record for consecutive wins.
- Melvin Ejim was named the Big 12 Player of the Year and an All-American by five organizations. He is the first Cyclone to be named Big 12 POY since Jamaal Tinsley (2001). Ejim was the only player from a BCS conference averaging at least 17 pts, eight rebounds while also shooting at least 50 percent from the field and 34 percent behind the arc. Ejim was the fourth player in Big 12 history to score 1,500 points and grab 1,000 career rebounds.
- Ejim was also a Capital One First-Team Academic All-American, joining Fred Hoiberg as the only first-team members in school history.
- DeAndre Kane transfered from Marshall to Iowa State for his senior season and had a major impact. He was named Big 12 Newcomer of the Year and Big 12 Tournament Most Outstanding Player. He hit the game winner against UNC with 1.6 seconds left. Kane was one of two players in the country to average at least 17 points, 6.0 rebounds and 5.0 assists and was named an All-American by six organizations.
- Georges Niang continued his progression into a star. Niang averaged 16.7 points and scored 20 or more points in 11 games. He was a major facilitator for the Cyclones’ high-powered offense (3.6 assists).
- Freshman Monté Morris made his first start on Feb. 3 at Oklahoma State and never looked back. He broke the NCAA record with a 4.79 assist-turnover ratio. In conference play, his a/to ratio was 6.9. He averaged 6.8 points per game and shot 40.6 percent from behind the arc, making 9-of-11 threes in the Big 12 and NCAA Tournaments.
