AMES, Iowa – For 13 years, Vic Miller has been an unsung hero for the Iowa State Athletics Department. As an Assistant Athletic Trainer for ISU, Miller has been a healer, mentor and friend to countless student-athletes and coaches. He was honored this month for his service by earning the inaugural Big 12 Conference Assistant Athletic Trainer of the Year Award.

A native of Decatur, Ind., Miller recently finished his 12th season as the head athletic trainer for the men’s basketball program. Keeping ISU basketball players healthy and on the court is his No. 1 priority. His expertise and guidance has been a key cog in the Cyclones’ unprecedented success on the hardwood in the last three seasons.

Mark Coberley, Iowa State’s Associate Athletics Director for Athletic Training, couldn’t think of a more deserving person for the prestigious award.

"We are thrilled that Vic has received this inaugural award,” Coberley said. “Vic does a tremendous job providing sports medicine services for our men's basketball team and other student-athletes. Our league is full of tremendous sports medicine professionals and for Vic to receive this award is a huge honor for him and a great representation of the truly outstanding professionals we have on our staff.”
Miller earned his bachelor’s degree from Purdue in 1993 and his master’s degree from Minnesota in 1995. He joined the Iowa State Athletic Training staff in 2002 after working as the athletic trainer for the women’s basketball program at Dayton.

Miller became the head men’s basketball athletic trainer at ISU in 2002. He’s more than a guy who tapes ankles. He assists in players nutritional needs, handles team travel arrangements and monitors the health of the student-athletes on a daily basis.

Iowa State head men’s basketball coach Fred Hoiberg knows how valuable Miller is to his program.

“Vic does an unbelievable job of preparing our student-athletes for the physical nature of Big 12 basketball,” Hoiberg said. “He is as important as anybody we have on our staff and is one of the best in the business.”
