McDermott Confirms Personnel Changes

AMES, Iowa—Iowa State head men’s basketball coach Greg McDermott addressed several personnel issues today, including confirming that junior Craig Brackins will bypass his senior season and make himself eligible for the 2010 NBA draft. Brackins is currently in the process of hiring an agent.

“Craig has been the face of our basketball program for the last two seasons and has always represented ISU in a first-class manner,” McDermott said. “He has worked extremely hard on his game, especially in the weight room, and has looked at all of his options before making this decision. We certainly are excited to see him thrive as a professional next season.”

A native of Palmdale, Calif., Brackins flirted with the possibility of turning professional after his sophomore season where he was an All-Big 12 First-Team selection in 2008-09. He was an All-Big 12 Second-Team pick this year as a junior, ranking in the top-10 in the Big 12 in both scoring (16.5 points) and rebounding (8.5 rebounds).

“I really enjoyed my experience at Iowa State.” Brackins said. “The fan support and love I received from the Ames community, my coaching staff and the ISU fans will always be something I treasure. I want to thank the coaching staff for helping me with this decision and I will always be a Cyclone.”

McDermott also confirmed that Marquis Gilstrap, whose NCAA appeal for another year of eligibility was denied earlier this week, is turning professional and sophomores Justin Hamilton (6-11, 260, Center, Alpine, Utah) and Dominique Buckley (6-2, 200, Guard, Detroit, Mich.) have asked for and been granted their release to transfer to other schools.

“Justin met with our staff and expressed a desire to play basketball at a school closer to home,” McDermott said. “Dominique is seeking a school where he can receive more playing time.”

Hamilton started 32 games in 2009-10, averaging 6.4 points and 5.4 rebounds. Buckley played in 27 games last season, averaging 1.4 points.

“I appreciate everything the Cyclone Nation has done for me,” Hamilton said. “The fan base, my teammates and the support of the community at ISU has been incredible, but I just feel I need to be at a school closer to home where my family will have a better opportunity to watch me play. I appreciate everything Coach McDermott and the coaching staff has done for me. They have helped me improve as a player and person.”
