MINNEAPOLIS, Minn.- The Iowa State tennis team continues its fall slate this weekend as it heads to Minneapolis to compete in the Gopher Invitational. The Cyclones will see action from 10 other schools this weekend including Minnesota, South Dakota, UNI, Drake, Eastern Michigan, Wisconsin, North Dakota, South Dakota State, Gonzaga and Iowa.

The tournament will be the first taste of collegiate tennis action for Iowa State’s freshmen, Samantha Budai, Talisa Merchiers, and Lydia Green, who did not play at last weekend’s Drake Invitational. Head coach Armando Espinosa is excited to see what these players will bring to the table this weekend.

“It is going to be interesting watching them play their first collegiate matches,” Espinosa said. “I think there will be some nerves involved there but I want to see them compete and most importantly see what we can do in doubles with them.”

Doubles proved to be more difficult for ISU last weekend at the Drake Invite with juniors Ksenia Pronina and Caroline Andersen falling in the second round, while sophomore Ana Gasparovic and junior Meghan Cassens were eliminated in the semifinals of their bracket. The team is anxious to see how the newcomers can help out in doubles play.

“Doubles, again this year, is going to be a very crucial point for us in matches,” Espinosa said. “Hopefully we can start to narrow down who we are going to play in the spring in doubles from those three freshmen.”

Pronina captured first place in the top flight, going 3-0 en route to the title. Gasparovic earned a runner-up finish in the second flight.

Tournament play begins Friday at the Baseline Tennis Center. First round doubles will begin at 9 am.
