Iowa State Readies for Texas Tech on ESPNU

AMES, Iowa - The Iowa State volleyball team is back in action Wednesday night in front of a national TV audience when the Cyclones (12-6, 6-2 Big 12) take on Texas Tech (8-16, 1-7 Big 12) at 8 p.m. on ESPNU.

Adam Amin and Maria Taylor will be calling the match for ESPNU. Fans can also follow the match via live stats and the live blog.

Cyclone Headlines
  • After moving into a three-way tie for second place, the second half of the Big 12 slate kicks off Wednesday as Iowa State hosts Texas Tech at 8 p.m. in front of a national audience on ESPNU.
  • The Cyclones defeated TCU in straight sets 25-14, 25-22, 25-23 Saturday evening in front of the largest crowd of the season for ISU and one of the best serving performances of the Christy Johnson-Lynch era.
  • Iowa State recorded an astonishing 13 service aces against the Horned Frogs, six coming in the first set. Kristen Hahn led the way with four aces, and Ciara Capezio, Tory Knuth and Caitlin Nolan each chipped in three aces. Mackenzie Bigbee led the ISU attack with 14 kills at a .440 hitting percentage.
  • The 13 service aces were the second-most in a match by a Christy Johnson-Lynch team, only surpassed by the 16 by ISU to open the 2006 season against Chicago State (when sets went to 30 points instead of the current 25).
  • Kristen Hahn continues to be one of the best liberos in the coutnry. The senior leads the Big 12 and is ranked fifth nationally with 5.72 digs per set. Hahn won her conference-record 16th Big 12 Defensive Player of the Week award for her efforts against Kansas and TCU.
  • Iowa State has been one of the best serving teams in the country. The Cyclones, as they have for the entirety of the 2013 season, lead the Big 12 in service aces per set (1.68 per set) and are the leaders in total aces in spite of playing the second-fewest sets in the league this year.
  • ISU has three of the top six servers in the Big 12 at its disposal. Middle blocker Tory Knuth leads the Big 12 at 0.49 aces per set, Ciara Capezio ranks third at 0.34 aces per set and Caitlin Nolan ranks sixth with 0.31 aces per frame.
  • Five of Iowa State’s six losses have come to teams with an RPI in the top-25. Those losses were to Texas (No. 1), Nebraska (No. 10), San Diego (No. 18), Oklahoma (No. 15), and Illinois (No. 21). At No. 39 in the RPI, St. Mary’s is ISU’s other loss in 2013.

About Texas Tech

  • The Texas Tech Red Raiders are 8-16 overall and 1-7 in Big 12 play coming into Wednesday’s match against Iowa State.
  • TTU dropped a home match to Baylor in four sets Saturday. Meghan Stacy led three Red Raiders in double-figures with 16 kills, while Rachel Brummitt chipped in 21 digs.
  • Tech was without its top attacker, Jenna Allen, against Baylor. Since starting her season at the top of the Big 12 campaign, Allen has 3.59 kills per set and 2.33 digs per set.
  • Breeann David continues to be Tech’s go-to attacker, ranking sixth in the Big 12 at 3.40 kills per set.
  • TTU libero Rachel Brummitt is second in digs per set behind Kristen Hahn at 5.29 digs per set.
  • Tech got its lone Big 12 win at TCU in five sets.
  • This will mark the 39th all-time meeting between the programs. Tech holds the series lead, 20-18, but ISU has won the last 14 confrontations.
  • In the first meeting back on Oct. 2, Iowa State swept Texas Tech 3-0 (25-21, 25-12, 25-13). Mackenzie Bigbee led the way with 17 kills and 14 digs. Jenelle Hudson had a double-double with 40 assists and 10 digs.
