Cyclones Unveil 2014 Outdoor Track & Field Schedule
AMES, Iowa – Iowa State director of track and field and cross country Martin Smith announced the 2014 outdoor track and field schedule this morning. The current schedule features 13 events, spanning 10 states.
The Cyclones will open outdoor competition Mar. 21-22 with a trip to Tempe, Ariz., where the men’s and women’s teams will compete at the Baldy Castillo Invitational.
The month of April will feature six meets for the Cyclones. Iowa State will split runners on the weekend of April 4-5, competing at one of two meets. Some will travel to a familiar site at the Stanford Invitational in Palo Alto, Calif., while others compete at the Tiger Track Classic hosted by Auburn University. After competing at the Jim Duncan Invitational (April 11-12), Iowa State will again split student-athletes at the Kansas Relays and the LSU Alumni Gold meet April 18-19. The Cyclones will then close out the month of April competing at the 105th running of the Drake Relays.
Postseason competition kicks off in May, following the Musco Twilight and the Payton Jordan Invitational (May 2-4). The Big 12 Outdoor Championships are slated for May 16-18 and will be hosted by Texas Tech in Lubbock, Texas. Following the conference championships, Iowa State student-athletes will travel to Fayetteville, Ark. for the NCAA West Preliminaries May 29-31, where the Cyclones will attempt to qualify for the NCAA Championships. The national championships will be held in Eugene, Ore. and are scheduled for June 11-14.
The Cyclones’ 2013-14 indoor track and field schedule has also been restructured. The first change will come Jan. 18, when teams travel to both the Big 4 Duals in Iowa City, Iowa and also to State College, Pa. for the Nittany Lion Challenge. January 25th, the teams will compete at the John Thomas Terrier Invitational in Boston, Mass.
Iowa State has added the David Hemery Valentine Invitational to the schedule on Feb. 8. The Cyclones will split runners for the weekend of Feb. 21-22. Student-athletes will run either at the Dome Open in Cedar Falls, Iowa or at the Alex Wilson Invitational in South Bend, Ind.
