Cyclones Ready For NCAA Outdoor Championships

AMES, Iowa - Seven members of the Iowa State track and field program will take the track this week at the NCAA Outdoor Track and Field Championships. The national meet will be held at Oregon's Hayward Field in Eugene, Oregon.

The Cyclones at #NCAATF are…
Christina Hillman. Hillman enters the championships as the No. 2 overall seed in the women’s shot put after posting the top mark at the West Preliminaries at 57 feet. The Dover, Delaware, native has won three of four competitions this outdoor season, never finishing lower than second, and has posted scoring marks of over 55’ in every outing. The two-time Big 12 champion improved her own program record at the conference championships with a mark of 57’8.5” and will be looking to defend her NCAA title from this past indoor season (2014 indoor).

Edward Kemboi. The four-time Big 12 800-meter champion will look to take the top spot on the podium after a runner-up performance at the indoor championships. Kemboi is coming off a dominating performance at the West Prelims, where he clocked the region’s top time to secure the No. 3 overall seed going into the national championships. The three-time All-American has posted two sub-1:48 performances on the season, running his fastest time of the year at the Mt. SAC Relays (1:46.14). Kemboi holds a career best of 1:45.98, running the time at this year's ISU Classic (indoor), and has run as fast as 1:46.06 outdoors.

Katy Moen. Moen is one of just five student-athletes to qualify in both the 5,000m and 10,000m at this year’s championships. The Fairbank, Iowa, native is riding a great postseason run highlighted by three consecutive victories at the Big 12 Championships (5K and 10K) and at the NCAA West Prelims (10K). Moen notched career bests in each of her regular season races as well, posting times of 4:22.51 (1,500m), 15:56.53 (5,000m) and 33:56.80 (10,000m). She ranks at No. 8 in the 1,500m, No. 6 in the 5,000m and No. 7 in the 10,000m on Iowa State's all-time lists. The breakout season earned Moen USTFCCCA recognition, being named the Midwest Track Athlete of the Year. Moen enters competition seeded No. 10 in the 10,000m and No. 22 in the 5,000m.

Ejiro Okoro. Okoro ranks at No. 4 in program history on the women’s side of the 800m, clocking her outdoor best this season at the Payton Jordan Invitational in 2:04.49. The two-time All-American ran to Big 12 titles both indoors and outdoors in and has broken 2:05 twice on the 2014 outdoor slate. The Birmingham, England, native is a two-time All-American in the event and is Iowa State’s indoor record holder at 2:03.91. She will be competing as the No. 14 overall seed. Okoro will be competing in her fourth career NCAA track and field championship, qualifying twice both indoors and outdoors.

Ese Okoro. Ejiro’s twin sister, Ese ranks No. 8 in the NCAA in the 400m hurdles with a career best of 56.78 seconds, clocking the time at LSU’s Tiger Classic. The Cyclone senior will be competing in her third-consecutive NCAA championships in the event and has posted sub-58 seconds in seven of her eight performances this season and has run sub-57 twice. Notching three event titles in the outdoor season. Okoro was the Big 12 runner-up in the 400H and ranks fourth in program history. Ese enters the meet seeded No. 18 after qualifying sixth out of the west region.

Kelly McCoy. McCoy has improved her personal record five times over the 2014 indoor and outdoor seasons in the women’s high jump. McCoy’s most recent PR came at the NCAA West Prelims, where she cleared a height of 5’9.75” (1.77m) to earn a berth at the national championships. With the performance, she moved up to fourth on the program’s all-time list. McCoy is just the fourth women’s high jumper to qualify for the national championships in program history, and she will look to notch add another PR to the list, entering competition seeded at No. 17 overall.

Jan Jeuschede. Jeuschede notched top-5 showings at both the indoor and outdoor conference championships in the men’s shot put and took ninth at the West Prelims to earn his spot in the NCAA field. The Rosrath, Germany, native posted a career best at the Jace Lacoste Invitational, hurling a distance of 60’9.5” to rank No. 4 on the all-time list. Jeuschede is a two-time NCAA qualifier and is one of nine Cyclones in program history to qualify for the national meet in the shot put. The Cyclone sophomore is also ranked No. 6 among German throwers this outdoor season.

*This season, the Cyclones have set eight program records, with seven coming from
the women’s team and one from the men’s. 25 different Cyclones have notched places on
Iowa State’s all-time top-10 lists in 2014.
*32 Cyclones currently on roster account for 41 total slots on Iowa State’s all-time top-
10 outdoor lists. Entering the NCAA Championships, 34 different Cyclone student-athletes
have notched a total of 81 personal records.
*Christina Hillman enters the NCAA shot put competition as the No. 2 overall seed.
Hillman has won back-to-back event titles at the Big 12 Championships and the NCAA
West Prelims.
*Hillman has posted scoring marks of 55’ or better in every competition this season,
including an Iowa State outdoor record of 57’8.5” at the conference championships.
*Edward Kemboi posted the region’s top-time at the West Prelims, breaking the tape in
1:47.40. The time is good for the No. 3 national seed at the championships.
*Kemboi picked up his fourth career Big 12 title at the conference championships and
has clocked two sub-1:48 performances on the year, with a season-best at the Mt. SAC
Relays in 1:46.14.
*Katy Moen enters the NCAA Championships as a dual-qualifi er. Moen earned auto-Q
bids in both the 5,000m and 10,000m at the regional meet. She is seeded No. 10 in the
10K and No. 22 in the 5K.
*Moen has put together a phenomenal postseason run, winning three consecutive races
at the Big 12 Championships (5K and 10K) and the NCAA West Prelims (10K).
*Ejiro Okoro will be making her third appearance at an NCAA track championship in the
800m. Okoro took eighth at the west regional and enters the championships with the No.
14 seed. The Cyclone clocked an outdoor-best 2:04.49 at the Payton Jordan Invitational
this season.
*Ese Okoro posted her sixth and seventh sub-58 second performances of the year in
the west regional 400-meter hurdles to qualify for the national championships. Okoro was
the Big 12 runner-up and holds a PR of 56.78 in the event.
*Kelly McCoy used a career performance to qualify for this year’s NCAA
Championships, clearing a height of 5’9.75” (1.77m) and notching her fi fth PR of 2013-14.
*Jan Jeuschede secured his bid to the NCAA Championships with a 9th-place fi nish in
the regional shot put competition. Jeuschede has posted scoring throws of 60’ or better
twice in the outdoor slate and captured the event title at the Jace LaCoste Invitational.
