Each day a member of the Iowa State women's basketball team will write a blog detailing our adventures in Italy. In today's blog, junior Madison Baier details our second day in Florence, Italy. To follow along on our journey even more closely, please follow @CycloneWBB.

Since it is was game day today, this morning/early afternoon was a "free day" for all of us because we have our pre-game meal at 2:45. We could go shopping, sightseeing, or catch up on sleep!

I slept until 9:30 a.m. and went to get breakfast. Most hotels have breakfast on the main floor, however, breakfast is served on the fifth floor. On the fifth floor there is a beautiful garden patio where you can see the entire city. I had breakfast with Blaire and Bry with a view of the city and the mountains!

My lovely roommate Kidd decided to sleep until 12:30 p.m. so we didn't get out to roam the city until 1 p.m. There are so many shops and markets to choose from it's almost overwhelming! We both decided we needed to buy souvenirs for our families. As we were walking past all of the stands everyone was offering prices with smiling faces. We buy the items that we wanted and headed back to the hotel! Every salesperson who notices me either says "Oh my gosh!" or "Wow!" and raises their hand showing me how tall I am. This is nothing new to me! Except, one man looked at me with his eyes very big and said, "OH MY GOSH! OH MY GOSH! I am single, what about you?!" Haha! Kidd and I laughed and kept walking along.

We had our pre-game meal at a restaurant that was within walking distance of our hotel. We were served penne pasta with tomato sauce as our first meal. The waitress took our plate once we were finished and brought another plate that had chicken breast and salad. I'm not a big fan of the salad here because the only "dressing" they use is olive oil and balsamic. When we were finished with the chicken they brought out a small fruit mix in a cup. The pasta was my favorite!

We beat Italian Select 59-56! I was very nervous for my first game back, but I did fine. Our first experience playing overseas was interesting... The gym floor seemed very big compared to Hilton! There was little air, but it wasn't too hot. We started off with the national anthem for both teams and then we exchanged gifts. We gave all of them ISU T-shirts and they gave us a pen & a dog tag that said Italy Tour 2014. Coach warned us before the game that the officiating would be different. It was very rough, but we had to push past it. After the game, we took a huge team picture with both teams.

Hopefully our next game will go more smoothly since we got the feel for the way the game is played over here! Next up we leave for Venice tomorrow morning! Thanks for the experience Florence. Stay tuned for tomorrow’s edition as Fallon will discuss our trip to Venice.

Hugs & kisses to mom & dad! Love & miss you both!
GO CYCLONES!

Maddy
