Cyclones Set Records, Fall To No. 1 OU
NORMAN, Okla. – Tori Torrescano walked for the 27th time this season on Sunday, a school record, as Iowa State (19-29, 4-11 Big 12) fell in its series finale at No. 1 Oklahoma (43-3, 11-1 Big 12), 12-0. With walks from Torrescano and Erica Miller in the contest, the 2013 Cyclones have walked more than any other team in program history.
Two innings after Torrescano’s walk tied the team record for walks in a season, Miller led off the fourth with the record-breaking walk, the 149th of the Cyclones’ season.
Jorden Spendlove was the third Cyclone to reach base against OU ace Keilani Ricketts, hit by a pitch in the top of the third, and was the only Cyclone to advance into scoring position, taking second on a passed ball by Sooner catcher Whitney Ellis.
The Sooners picked up seven runs on eight hits in the first inning against Taylor Smith (7-9), highlighted by RBI-doubles from Shelby Pendley and Lauren Chamberlain. Ricketts plated the final two runs against the Cyclone starter with a two-run home run in the second. Smith took the loss after one-plus innings of work, allowing nine runs on 10 hits while walking and striking out none.
After Ricketts’ home run, OU loaded the bases against reliever Madison Jones, helped by an Iowa State error, for Chamberlain, who walked in the 10th Sooner run. A single by Georgia Casey scored the second unearned run of the inning for an 11-0 lead.
With two outs in the bottom of the fourth, OU crossed home for its final run with an RBI-single from Jessica Vest.
Ricketts (24-1) struck out 10 in five innings in the circle, walking two and hitting one but not allowing a hit or a run.
On Monday, the Cyclones host their make-up doubleheader with UMKC at 2 and 4 p.m. CDT at the Cyclone Sports Complex.
