Gymnasts Put On A Show At Intrasquad Scrimmage
AMES, Iowa – The Iowa State gymnastics team held their intrasquad scrimmage, which was won by the Cardinal squad, 8-5, on Tuesday in Hilton Coliseum. Fans got their first chance to watch the 2014 squad in action and a lucky few were selected as guest judges.
With the team putting on their first performance for a live audience, head coach Jay Ronayne said that he always expects a bit of an adventure. However, he was happy with his squad’s response to their first routines back in front of fans.
“I’m very happy with how they did,” Ronayne said. “You never know what the difference is going to be coming back out into public from being in practice. You don’t know what’s going to happen. I was pleased with what they did."
The format pitted gymnast against gymnast as the Cardinal and Gold teams sent out one performer at a time to face off against one another. The guest judges would then pick a winner after each routine.
“They made the adjustments,” Ronayne said. “They could have gone the wrong direction. What makes a champion is being able to make adjustments when you need to. I’m very pleased to see a lot of that.”
The Cyclones will officially kick-off their season on Jan. 5 at 2:00 p.m. CT as they take on Penn State in Hilton Coliseum.
