Iowa State Starts Bronco Classic With 3-1 Win
SANTA CLARA, Calif. – The Iowa State softball team started the Marriott Bronco Invitational with a 3-1 victory over hosts Santa Clara Friday afternoon at the SCU Softball Field. The win improved Iowa State to 9-1 on the season while the Broncos fell to 0-6 overall.
Keys to the Game
Iowa State took advantage of a small window of opportunity in the first inning, after the first two ISU hitters were retired in order, Sara Davison stepped up with a double to right-centerfield. Aly Cappaert did not waste any time, getting ISU on the board with a double of her own to left-center. The hit extended Cappaert’s school record hit streak to 17 games.
Cappaert was again the key to the Cyclones making it 2-0 in the top of the third with a bases-loaded walk. However, Iowa State was not able to tack on any more runs in spite of having the bases loaded with nobody out.
Santa Clara pulled one back in the bottom of the fifth via an error, but Iowa State got the insurance run in the top of the sixth as Sara Rice posted her team-high 13th RBI of the season with a double down the leftfield line to secure the 3-1 advantage.
From there, Katie Johnson and the Iowa State defense worked out of some tough jams, ending a sixth inning that started with two hits by recording a double play when a fly ball to center was caught by Brittany Gomez, fired home to Rachel Hartman and to Sara Rice at third to get a runner. In the seventh, SCU rallied to get two on with two outs, but Johnson delivered her seventh strikeout of the game to Jordan Newell to close the game out.
Player of the Game
Sara Davison. The senior second baseman got on-base in all four of her plate appearances, starting with a double in the first that led to Cappaert driving her in the next at bat. After drawing walks in her next two plate appearances, increasing her career total to 68. She then recorded a single in the seventh inning.
Iowa State has a doubleheader tomorrow, starting at noon CST, 10 a.m. in Santa Clara with a game against San Diego. The Cyclones take the diamond at the SCU Softball Field again at 5 p.m. CST, 3 p.m. PST, for a game against Sacramento State.
