AMES, Iowa- The Iowa State tennis team (8-6, 0-2 Big 12) dropped the Big 12 opener to No. 35 Kansas (9-3, 1-0 Big 12), 6-1, at Ames Racquet and Fitness Center.

“We were right in it,” Espinosa said. “A 6-1 final is not really depicting of the match. It’s not really what happened out there.”

Junior Ksenia Pronina earned a powerful win at No. 1 singles over Dylan Windom in the Cyclones’ sole singles victory of the day. The Geraardsbergen, Belgium, native fought through a first-set tiebreak to take the win, 7-6(4), 6-4.

“[Pronina] is playing really well,” Espinosa said. “She’s sticking to what she does best.”

Pronina teamed up with freshman Samantha Budai at No. 1 doubles to take down Windom and Paulina Los, 8-6. Despite the win, Kansas took the doubles point after wins at both other doubles slots.

“I think the momentum of the match kind of switched after we lost the doubles point,” Espinosa said. “There were tons of opportunities there.”

After a loss in the first set, junior Meghan Cassens fought her way to a third set at No. 2 singles against Maria Jose Cardona. Cardona took the match, 6-2, 3-6, 1-0(8).

Freshman Talisa Merchiers fell in a second-set tiebreak to Morgan Barnhill, 6-3, 7-6(0).

The Cyclones will get another chance at Big 12 success this Sunday when they take on No. 58 Kansas State. The match will begin at 9 a.m. CT at Ames Racquet and Fitness Center.
