Ejim to Open 2013 Iowa Special Olympics
AMES, Iowa – Iowa State hoops star Melvin Ejim will be the Honorary Games Chair at the 2013 Iowa Special Olympics, May 23-25 in Ames, Iowa.
Ejim joins a long list of Iowa State student-athletes who give back to the community and volunteer their time for public service events. It’s a special honor for the All-Big 12 performer.
“I think it’s a great opportunity for me to show how much respect I have for the Special Olympics,” Ejim said. “The athletes work extremely hard and all of the volunteers put in so much time and effort to make this event a huge success. This is an incredible honor for me.”
As the Honorary Games Chair, Ejim will officially declare the games open for competition at the conclusion of The Parade of Athletes on May 23 in Hilton Coliseum.
Ejim is the second Cyclone men’s basketball player to serve as Honorary Games Chair in recent years. Former NBA player Craig Brackins was the chair in 2009.
Ejim, a senior to be for the Cyclones, was an All-Big 12 Third-Team pick in 2013 after leading the league in both rebounding (9.3) and double-doubles (15). A Capital One Academic All-District 6 selection, Ejim grabbed 326 rebounds last year, tying for the sixth-best single-season total in school history.
