IOWA CITY, Iowa- A strong second half from the Cyclones wasn’t enough as Iowa State fell 3-0 to Iowa on the road Friday night.

The Hawkeyes (5-0) jumped out to a 1-0 lead after the first 10 minutes after a header by Anne Thomas off of a set shot. The Hawkeyes were quick to make it 2-0 with  their second goal in the 20th minute. Iowa State (3-2) allowed fewer looks for the Hawkeyes in the second half but were unable to overcome the deficit.  Iowa scored a third goal in the 27th minute of the second half to put the Hawkeyes up 3-0 for good.

“The biggest problem that we have had and five of the six goals that we have given up this year have come off set pieces,” head coach Wendy Dillinger said. “There are two sides to the coin. First, we have to stop with the fouls and we have to do a better job of marking set pieces.”

Iowa took 12 shots in comparison to Iowa State’s four. The Cyclones were able to move the ball, but solid defense by Iowa allowed few good looks and Iowa State wasn’t able to capitalize. Early in the second half Jessica Reyes missed a shot that sailed just high of the goal that would have put the Cyclones down by just one. Emily Goldstein, Lauren Roeling, Jessica Reyes and Hayley Womack all recorded shots for Iowa State.

“We have to learn from this,” Dillinger said. “We need players to step up because injuries can’t be an excuse. I think that some players stepped up. Madi Ott played fantastic tonight. Being a freshman and handling a player like Cloe Lasasse, she did a good job. Our mistakes are fixable and we will be ready.”

A total of 21 Iowa State players saw action tonight, including seven freshman who all played valuable minutes.

Senior goalkeeper Maddie Jobe added four more saves to her career total. The Cyclone goaltender now has 22 saves this season.

The Cyclones return to action Sunday with a home game against North Dakota at 12 p.m. Results will be available on Cyclones.com after the conclusion of the game.
