NORMAN, Okla. – The Iowa State tennis team (8-15, 1-8) dropped a 4-1 decision to Kansas (11-9, 2-7) Thursday afternoon in the first round of the Big 12 Championships.

Kansas secured the first point of the match, getting wins at No. 2 and No. 3 doubles to go up 1-0.

The Jayhawks extended their lead to 2-0 with Anastasia Trubica beating Emma Waites, 6-0, 6-2, at No. 5 singles. Sophomore Meghan Cassens redeemed herself with a 6-4, 6-1 win over KU’s Paulina Los at No. 3 singles. Cassens lost to Los in straight sets in Sunday’s regular season finale but her bounce-back win drew the Cyclones to within 2-1 on Thursday.

The Cyclones had their backs against the wall after Victoria Khanevskaya defeated ISU’s Caroline Andersen, 6-3, 6-1, at No. 6 singles, putting the Jayhawks one win away from clinching the match with a 3-1 lead.

Kansas clinched the match with Maria Jose Cardona’s straight-set victory over Ksenia Pronina. Cardona took the first set 7-6 and rallied from a 3-1 second-set deficit to claim the 6-3 win.

Senior Simona Cacciuttolo won the first set of her No. 1 singles match against Belen Luduena, 6-4, but was trailing 5-4 in the second when the match was decided. Freshman Ana Gasparovic also saw her No.4 singles match cut short. Gasparovic and KU’s Dylan Windom were in the third set after splitting the first two frames. The Cyclone won the first set 6-1 before dropping the second 6-3.

With the loss, Iowa State's season comes to an end. Kansas advances to face top-seeded Baylor Friday.
