Pronina Captures Top Flight Championship At Drake
DES MOINES, Iowa – Iowa State junior Ksenia Pronina earned a first-place finish to lead the Cyclones on Sunday at the Drake Fall Invitational.
Pronina, a junior from Duesseldorf, Germany, earned an impressive 6-3, 6-1, victory over Drake’s Nell Boyd. Pronina finished the weekend 3-0 in singles action.
For Pronina, the victory was a culmination of a good summer of training according to Iowa State head coach Armando Espinosa.
“We could see the benefits of her coming back early and getting into playing form,” Espinosa said. “I think the tennis she played this summer really helped her confidence. We knew that because she came back early we wanted her to play this weekend. She needed the competition and I’m very happy with how she played.”
In the Flight “B” singles final, sophomore Ana Gasparovic came up short against another Drake foe, Mariel Ante. Ante denied Gasparovic the title with a 6-2, 7-5 win.
Junior Meghan Cassens earned a 6-0, 6-0 win against Drake’s Lea Kozulic in an exhibition match.
Espinosa was pleased with the opening weekend effort by the Cyclones.
“I thought it was a pretty successful weekend for us in singles action,” Espinosa said. “I liked what I saw from the team in how they competed. I do want to see more from us in doubles play because I think we need to improve there, but hopefully we gained some confidence and can build on that.”
Iowa State returns to action next weekend at the Gopher Invitational. Play begins Friday.
