AMES, Iowa-Iowa State head soccer coach Tony Minatta announced the addition of nine new members for the 2014-15 season Wednesday. The nine additions hail from seven different states.

“I am very excited about the 2014 recruiting class that we have signed this week,” Minatta said.  “All nine of these athletes have had a tremendous amount of success both on the field and in the classroom. Although these athletes all come from different backgrounds and different states, one common thread among them, is that they have all competed on teams with a winning history for both club and high school, as well as their own individual accomplishments.”

Sophia Donofrio (di-NAH-freeo) played for Waukesha West High School and for FC Wisconsin Eclipse club team. During her freshman season, Donofrio played a key part in the teams run as they reached the Wisconsin state finals. While playing for FC Winsconsin Elite, Donofrio won the state cup her freshman season and played in the Elite Clubs National League for four years.

“Sophia is a very competitive and driven athlete, who has made the decision to train with her club team year round,” Minatta said.  “She puts in a lot of work both technically and has shown an incredible soccer IQ in her matches the past few years.  She is a very versatile player, who will be able to come in and compete for a spot at both outside back and wide mid.  She has proven herself against the toughest competition in the ECNL and plays for one of the most respected coaches in club soccer nationally.  We are very excited about her addition and what she will bring to the team.”

Laura Friedrich (FREED-RIK) played for Ames High School for the Ankeny Rush and Ames Soccer Club teams. Friedrich is a three time All-Conference selection including a unanimous First Team All-Conference selection in 2012. She helped lead her club team to a victory in the State Cup Championship in 2013 along with a second place finish in 2011

We are very excited to be adding a local Ames athlete in Laura, she is a very determined player, who has shown an incredible work ethic both on and off the field,” Minatta said.  “She was a starter this past fall on the Iowa state cup champion Iowa Rush team and has had numerous accolades with the Ames High School team. We are excited for the leadership that she will bring to the team being a team captain with Ames High since 2011.”

Emily O’Grady will join the Cyclones from Park Ridge, Ill. O’Grady played for Maine South High School and FC United U18 soccer club from Illinois. O’Grady has earned two varsity letters as starting goalkeeper for her high school squad and is a two-time all-area honoree. O’Grady helped lead her club team to a victory in the 2012 Illinois State Cup Championship and a finalist appearance in the 2013 Illinois State Cup.

Emily is a goal keeper from Illinois, who has had great success at not only the club and high school level, but also through the Olympic Development Program,” Minatta said.  “She is currently the goal keeper for the Region II team and has been on the Illinois State team for the past two years.  She is very tough and athletic goalkeeper, who has the ability to make the flying save.  She has lead her club team to the Illinois State Championship, as well as a Region II Semifinal, she has played in and excelled in high pressure situations.  Emily will provide stability and competition at a position where we will need someone to step in and take the starting spot with the loss of Maddie Jobe to graduation.”

Lindsey Hendon attended and played for Green Mountain High School in Lakewood, Colo. and played for the Colorado Rush club team. Hendon is a two-time All-State honoree and a three time-time All-Conference honoree including an All-Conference MVP runner-up award. Hendon compiled a 42-4-5 record as a starter including 28 shutouts.  With the Colorado Rush Hendon won the 2010 Nike Manchester Cup and the 2010 Gothia Cup.

Lindsey is a goal keeper from Colorado and plays for one of the top and most recognized youth clubs in the entire country, the Colorado Rush,” Minatta said. “ Lindsey helped propel her club team to an elite eight position in the ECNL North American League and is currently the number one ranked goal keeper in Colorado High School Soccer with a .089 goals against average.  Lindsey has a great presence in the goal and a real command of her box and will definitely be a welcome addition and have the opportunity to earn the starting position with the loss of Maddie Jobe to graduation.”

Maribell Morales will join the Cyclones from La Habra, California where she played for Sunny Hills High School and Beach FC club team. Morales was named First Team All-Orange County Varsity in 2013, First Team All-CIF in 2012 and 2013 and has been named as a First Team All-League player three different times.

“Maribell is an incredibly gifted technical player from Southern California, who is very creative with the ball at her feet and has great vision,” Minatta said. “In addition to her high soccer IQ, she is a natural goal scorer who has been a consistent finisher for both her club and high school teams.  She played for a team that made the elite eight of the ECNL Champions League, which is one of the highest levels of competition in the nation for youth competitive soccer. I have seen Maribell score some fantastic goals, both in the run of play and off of her fantastic set pieces.  She is the type of player that can get you the game winner with no time left on the clock.”

Kaley Nieters  will join the Cyclones from St. Louis, Mo. where she played for St. Joseph’s Academy and St. Louis Scott Gallagher- Premier Navy club team. Nieters was honored as a 2014 St. Louis Soccer Hall of Fame Future All-Star Inductee. During her high school soccer career Nieters was named First Team All-State in 2013 and First-Team All-Conference in 2011, 2012 and 2013.

“Kaley is a very dynamic forward who not only is a natural goal scorer, but also is great at distributing the ball as she is one of the leaders in assists for both her high school and club teams,” Minatta said.  “She has led her club to three Missouri State Cup Championships, as well a third place finish in last year’s high school state championships.  Kaley will step in and be able to really help with our front line by not only putting balls in the back of the net, but setting up our other forwards for easy finishes. She is a proven winner, who has always risen to the occasion when the game called for it.”

Sasha Stinson (Saw-Sha) attended Leander High School in Cedar Park, Texas and played for Lonestar96 ECNL club team. Sasha has experienced immense success during her club soccer career winning the 2011 ECNL National Championship, 2012-13 conference championship and 2012-13 national championship qualifiers.

“Sasha is a fierce competitor who has played for one of the top youth competitive club teams in the country her entire career,” Minatta said. “Her Lonestar team has been ranked in the top 10 of their age group since they were U13 and Sasha has been a mainstay at the outside back position.  Not just a defender, she has contributed numerous goals coming out of the back and will immediately be able to step in and ease the loss of both our starting outside backs from this past year.  She is truly the type of player that can win the ball defensively, then drive the length of the field and score for you on the other end.”

Stella Strohman will join the Cyclones from Ames high school where she also played for U18 Iowa Rush Soccer Club. While playing for Ames High School, Strohman was named as 2011-Unanimous First Team All-Conference as a freshman, 2011-Team Offensive Player of the Year, 2012 Second Team All-Conference and 2013 First Team All-District.  As a junior, Strohman led her team to become conference champions and was named team captain.

“We are very excited to be adding a local Ames athlete in Stella Maris, she is a very technical player with a high soccer IQ,” Minatta said. “Stella Maris is also a member of the Iowa Rush team that won this past seasons state championships, in addition, she has had numerous years competing for the Iowa ODP team.  Along with her club accomplishments, Stella was named to the second team All-Conference her junior year as well as the all district team this past year.  We expect her to come in and show the work ethic and leadership that enabled her to be team captain with Ames High the past two years.”

Macy Vrabel hails from San Diego, where she attended Torrey Pines high school and played for San Diego Surf club team. During 2013 Vrabel was named to the San Diego All-League Second Team and earned Union Tribute All-Academic Team honors. While playing for San Diego Surf, Vrabel led her team to an 11th place finish in the 2013 ECNL national championships and a 13th place finish in 2012.

Macy is a very technical and creative midfield player who currently plays for one of the top club teams in Southern California,” Minatta said.  “She consistently trains in a highly competitive environment against some of the best players in the country and her team has had a tremendous amount of success in some of the highest ranked tournaments in youth competitive club soccer.  As a starter on that team, Macy has shown tremendous growth and will continue to improve as a Cyclone.  She will immediately step in and compete for a spot in our midfield as she is very comfortable playing high level, possession-oriented soccer.”
