AMES, Iowa - Former Iowa State and All-Big 12 golfer, Chris Baker, earned his Web.com Tour card Tuesday afternoon.

Baker competed in the final stage of the Web.com Tour Qualifying Tournament, playing 108 holes of golf in a six-day span. The tournament was held at PGA West’s two courses in La Quinta, Calif.

“Your mind is working a lot and it’s pretty stressful,” Baker said. “You forget what day of the week it is. It was Monday night and Monday Night Football was on, and I didn’t even know it. You’re not used to playing a tournament on a Monday. It’s a long week, but as it turned out it, it was a great week.”

The tournament featured 152 golfers all vying for a spot on the Web.com Tour in 2014. Baker finished tied for 42nd at 12-under (70-66-71-70-73-70) in the six rounds. His bogey-free, second-round 66 was aided by four birdies and an eagle.

“The Nicklaus course is just a lot more comfortable to play of the two (courses),” Baker said. “I just got a few little putts to go and I shot 5-under on that nine and played the two par-fives at 3-under.”

To make the already grueling tournament even more difficult, Baker played the first round while batlling flu-like symptoms.

“Getting off to that start at the beginning was very nice with everything that was going on,” Baker said.

With his finish in the top-45, Baker will be exempt for the first eight events on the 2014 Web.com Tour. He will be competing for one of the 50 PGA Tour cards awarded by the Web.com Tour next season.

“In 2011, I was out there with my conditional card and was on the outside waiting to get in,” said Baker. “This year, I know when I’m going to play and it makes it a little easier to mentally prepare not having to worry about when I’m going to get to play.”

While at Iowa State, Baker garnered 13 top-10 finishes, which ranks fifth-all time in school history. In his senior season (2007-08), he tied the school record for top-10s in a season, finishing in the top-10 eight times that year. He capped off this historic season with a trip to the NCAA Central Regional as an individual.

He was named Iowa State’s 2008 Male Athlete of the year while also being selected First-Team All-Big 12.
