Iowa State Splits South Dakota Doubleheader
AMES, Iowa - The Iowa State softball team split its doubleheader against South Dakota Tuesday at the Cyclone Sports Complex. Iowa State came from 4-0 down to defeat USD 6-5 in eight innings in game one, while the Coyotes came back in the second game to win 12-3. Iowa State is now 21-23 on the season, South Dakota 25-17.
Game One: Iowa State 6, South Dakota 5 (8 innings)
South Dakota's offense was the first to get off the ground in game one of the twin bill. South Dakota struck first in the second on an RBI-single from Katie Cochran and then made it 2-0 in the third on a sacrifice fly by Yvon Minogue. The Coyotes doubled their lead in the fourth as Kassie Loe put a two-run home run on the board to make it 4-0 USD.
ISU's offense finally got its breakthrough in the bottom of the fourth as Maddie Reese recorded an RBI-single to reduce the South Dakota lead to 4-1. In the fifth, Iowa State reduced the Coyotes lead to 4-3 as Rachel Hartman posted an RBI-double and Jorden Spendlove got an RBI-single.
South Dakota added a vital insurance run via an Allie Daly home run in the top of the seventh to make it 5-3, but Iowa State still had another chance. With a runner on first, Hartman produced a 2-run home run to left-center off the scoreboard to tie the game at 5-5 and force extra innings.
ISU did not waste any time putting away the game in the eighth. Reese led off the inning with a single and got moved to second on a Brittany Gomez SAC bunt. Two batters later, Lexi Slater made the game-winning hit past the shortstop to bring Reese home and secure the 6-5 win.
Game Two: South Dakota 12, Iowa State 3
This time it was the Iowa State offense that got off to the quick start as the Cyclones got both Spendlove and Sara Davison on in the bottom of the second. With two outs, it was Reese again producing the big hit as she powered a double into the gap in left-center that allowed both ISU runners to score and put the Cyclones ahead 2-0.
The South Dakota bats came out in force in the fourth inning and onwards as the Coyotes scored three in the fourth, two in the fifth, fourth in the sixth and three in the seventh. USD tallied a pair of home runs and three doubles in the second game. Their effort was aided by three errors from the Cyclone defense.
Iowa State wraps up its nine-game home stand Wednesday as the Cyclones take on Iowa as part of the Iowa Corn Cy-Hawk Series. First pitch is slated for 4 p.m.
