Former Cyclone Jumper Lamela-Tobio Passes Away

AMES, Iowa – Former Cyclone All-American long and triple jumper Yago Lamela-Tobio passed away last night in Aviles, Spain. Lamela was 36 years old.

Lamela-Tobio competed at Iowa State for two years before returning to Europe to compete on the professional circuit. In his time as a Cyclone, the Aviles, Spain, native earned All-America recognition in both the long jump and the triple jump, capturing the Big 8 long-jump title in 1996. Lamela-Tobio’s collegiate marks of 26 feet, 3 inches (long jump) and 53’01.75” (triple jump) both rank third all-time in Iowa State history.

Lamela-Tobio continued to see success on the world stage, making the podium at three World Championship events. In 1999, he took silver in the long jump at both the indoor and outdoor World Championships, setting a personal record at the indoor event at 28’01”. Lamela-Tobio returned to the podium in 2003, earning the silver medal indoors and the bronze at the Outdoor World Championships in the long jump.

Lamela-Tobio’s mark of 28’01” was the European record in the long jump until 2009.
