ELUM, Wash. - The No. 25 Iowa State women’s golf team opened up play at the 2014 NCAA West Regional this afternoon at the Tumble Creek Club at Suncadia Resort.  The Cyclones fired a first-round 300 to sit in a tie for seventh place in the field of 24.

With two rounds to play, the Cyclones are in the hunt for a spot in the NCAA Championships. The top eight teams will advance on to Tulsa, Oklahoma to compete in the NCAA finals, May 20-23 at the Tulsa Country Club.

Top-ranked USC is the first-round leader with a score of 284. The Trojans’ Kyung Kim fired a 66 this morning to take the lead in the medalist race.

Leading the way for ISU was senior Prima Thammaraks, who is competing in her fourth NCAA Regional. She tied her career best score in NCAA Regional play with a 1-over 73 to sit in a tie for 19th.

Freshman Carmen Vidau turned in an excellent round for the Cyclones with a 2-over 74. Vidau was 3-under on the back nine to close out the final nine holes with a 33. She is currently tied for 24th.

Vidau helped spearhead ISU’s back-nine surge. The Cyclones were 17-over as a team on the front nine, but rallied to go even-par in the final nine holes.

Cajsa Persson (T45-76), Sasikarn On-iam (T62-77) and Chonlada Chayanun (T62-77) rounded out the Cyclone scoring on the first day.
