Iowa State To Face Santa Clara
AMES, Iowa- The Iowa State soccer team travels to California to take on the Santa Clara Broncos Thursday at 9 p.m. CT. The game will mark the first of a two game road swing in California for the Cyclones, as they face Stanford on Sunday at 1 p.m.
Last time out
Iowa State defeated the University of North Dakota handily with a 4-0 route in which four different Cyclones scored. The Cyclones fired 32 shots, an all-time top-5 school mark, all while giving up only one shot to North Dakota. Senior goalkeeper Maddie Jobe tied the school’s all-time shutout record with her 16th career shutout.
Scouting the Broncos
Entering the year as a preseason top-25 team, the Broncos (3-2) have faced one of the toughest schedules yet. Their two losses have come against the current top-two ranked teams in the country. Santa Clara was edged out by North Carolina 2-0 and then fell to the University of Virginia 4-0. Since their two early defeats the Broncos have strung together three straight wins. Santa Clara is led by senior midfielder Julie Johnston who has half of the team’s goals in their five games so far this season. Johnston who was a 2011 first team All-American was named as a U.S soccer young female athlete of the year finalist as a junior.
What to watch for
The key matchup in this game will be how the Iowa State defense stacks up against the Santa Clara offense. In six games this season the Cyclones have only given up more than one goal in a game once. Iowa State goalkeeper Maddie Jobe not only is tied for first in the school’s all-time shutouts with 16, but she currently ranks fourth in saves in the Cyclone record book as well. Iowa State will look to stop Julie Johnston and company who have outscored their opponents 6-0 after their first two defeats.
Results will be available on Cyclones.com after the conclusion on the game.
