Wegner was the first dominant center in Cyclone basketball history. Wegner was Iowa State’s first basketball All-American, receiving Converse third-team recognition in 1935. As a senior in 1935, Wegner and the Cyclones captured the school’s first Big Six title with a school-best 13-3 record. ISU led the Big Six in defense, allowing just 28.3 points per game. Wegner finished second in the conference in scoring, averaging 10.6 points per contest. After sitting out the first half of the first game of his career, Wegner played every minute of his three-year career. He was a two-time all-Big Six honoree, leading Iowa State in scoring all three seasons. Wegner was also a star on the baseball diamond. He played centerfield and was the leading slugger on Iowa Sate teams in 1933 and 1935 that finished as conference runners-up.
