Harry Burrell was one of the longest-serving sports information directors in collegiate history. His 44 years in the sports information profession still stands as one of the longest tenures in the profession’s history. During his stint, Burrell earned 11 separate citations for outstanding accomplishment or services. He was named to the Helm’s Foundation Hall of Fame, the Iowa Association of Track Coaches’ Hall of Fame and the College of Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA) Hall of Fame.
Burrell served on the board of directors for a number of organizations: Football Writers of America, Basketball Writers of America, Iowa Golf Association, National Foundation and Football Hall of Fame, Ames Golden Agers and West Story County Red Cross. He was president of the Iowa Golf Association and CoSIDA.
