Chris Murray was the ISU coach responsible for the Cyclones’ rise to national prominence in cross country and track. Under his direction, Iowa State won the first of four AIAW cross country and Big Eight championships. In those four years, Murray’s squads sustained only one defeat.
His track squads also were highly competitive, placing among the top five schools at the national AIAW meet from 1974-78. Murray’s squads won six outdoor conference titles and three indoor league crowns.
During his tenure at Iowa State, Murray guided 15 athletes to All-America honors. A native of British Columbia, Murray placed seventh for Canada in the steeplechase in the 1964 Olympic Games in Tokyo.
