Rhoads Snags Highly Touted Defensive Tackle

AMES, Iowa -- Defensive tackle Quinton Pompey of Bradenton, Fla.-Manatee High School, among the nation’s top defensive line recruits, has signed national letter of intent to play at Iowa State next season. Pompey, who chose Iowa State over offers from Penn State, Miami (Fla.), Missouri and Louisville, was a high school teammate of fellow ISU signee Quenton Bundrage.

“Quinton possesses the skills to be a difference-maker on the defensive side of the football,” Iowa State head coach Paul Rhoads said. “I see him making a major impact at a position where we are looking for more depth.”

Standing 6-3 and weighing in at just under 300 pounds, Pompey was ranked 41st in the country among Class of 2011 defensive tackles and 66th among 2011 prospects in the state of Florida by Rivals.com. The Hurricanes were state semifinalists the past two seasons.

The native of Palmdale, Fla. made 62 tackles, with 11 sacks and forced two fumbles as a senior. In his junior season, he tallied 100 tackles and 12 sacks, while breaking up six passes and forcing a fumble.

Four former Manatee players own Super Bowl rings and six have played for collegiate national title squads.
