AMES, Iowa – When Iowa State’s football team enters the field in its season opener this fall, it will run under a massive, brand new state-of-the-art video display at Jack Trice Stadium.

The Board of Regents, State of Iowa, approved final plans for a super-sized structure that will rise above the Jacobson Athletic Building in the stadium’s north end. Construction on the support structure for the scoreboard began this week.

The high-definition video screen measures approximately 36 feet high and 79.5 feet wide. It will feature unparalleled picture clarity and colors and has the flexibility to showcase full-screen video or a combination of video, graphics, statistics and game operation functions.

“With the Regents’ approval last month, we can now move forward expediently to have the video display and sound system ready to go when the Cyclones hit the field this fall,” Iowa State Director of Athletics Jamie Pollard said. “The amazing display and the versatility of the board will be a huge enhancement to the game-day enjoyment for fans. It’s like adding a huge flat screen HD television to your home.”

The video screen features 720 x 1,584 (lines x columns) pixels and it is five times larger than what is currently in Jack Trice Stadium. The entire structure will be 158 feet wide and the top of the scoreboard will be 101 feet above the playing surface.

Daktronics, recognized as the world leader in full-color LED video displays, will design, manufacture and install the video display. Daktronics also developed the video display / ring beams currently used in Hilton Coliseum.

The project will also include a Daktronics custom-built sound system for Jack Trice Stadium. That new Sportsound system uses the latest digital audio technology and will implement pounding bass energy and smooth mid- and high-range frequencies.

“The impact of this structure on our football program is hard to quantify, but its size, quality and versatility will significantly enhance Jack Trice Stadium,” Pollard said. “Beyond a significant upgrade of entertainment possibilities, it also helps us maximize marketing potential within the stadium.”

The pillars of the support system measure 8 feet wide x 14 feet deep. The board will be positioned 10 feet back from the south face of the Jacobson Athletic Building. The display and speaker system weigh approximately 67,050 pounds.

The need for a new video display and sound system has been discussed in recent years because the current system, purchased in 2002, is outdated. The current board will be used in some capacity (such as game statistics and other in-game messages) in its present location for the foreseeable future.

The Regents originally approved the project in October, 2010, but added costs for the support structure needed a second approval. The project cost is approximately $5 million and the athletics department will finance the costs with program revenues and multi-media rights.
