AMES, Iowa – One has already graduated. The other will do so in May.  Both are now getting ready to take their respective shots at playing in the National Football League.

Former Iowa State linebacker Jake Knott will graduate in May with a bachelor’s degree in business management. A two-time first-team All-Big 12 honoree, the former Waukee prep can be found in the Bergstrom Football Facility, working out with fellow former Cyclones like A.J. Klein, Roosevelt Maggit, Josh Lenz and Carter Bykowski .

The initial postseason workouts were specially crafted to assist the former Cyclones to the specific drills that NFL teams use to test aspiring professionals, such as agility skills, weight lifting and the 40-yard dash.

“I’ve finished up most of my workouts with teams,” Knott said. “Now I’m getting ready for camp.”

Preparation has switched back to basic football.

“The workouts I’m doing right now are set up by (Iowa State assistant strength and conditioning coach) Clayton Oyster,” Knott said. “They are very similar to what we would have been doing during the season. Clayton did a great job preparing us for the pro day tests.  Now I’m getting ready for camp, getting better and getting ready to play football after the draft.”

Knott has been concentrating on personal improvement, not pre-draft chatter.

“If I listened to everyone who ever told me something, I wouldn’t be here today,” Knott said.  “Whether I’m drafted, undrafted, free agent it doesn’t matter. I’m just going to keep working hard and get ready to make myself an asset to a team.”

Former second-team All-Big 12 strong safety Durrell Givens is ready for his chance.

“I took a week off after the season and started working out again, going through an increasing weight regimen,” Givens said.  “I worked on technique to get ready for the tests and make sure I was comfortable in the stances in which I would be tested.  I have a tryout this week with the Oakland Raiders.”

Givens had graduated in May 2012 with a degree in Liberal Studies. A writer with an eye on being a high school English teacher, he had to take classes to be eligible last fall. He didn’t take the easy way out.

"I didn’t go take easy classes,” Givens said. “I like to write and took a linguistics class to get the language down and classical studies to learn about the parts of our language that come from Greek and Latin.

Both of these Cyclones will be ready for any fork in the road.
