Miller, Cappaert Lead Cyclones Past Bulldogs
AMES, Iowa – Iowa State (18-19, 3-3 Big 12) held on to defeat Drake (21-15, 7-3 MVC) on Tuesday at the Cyclone Sports Complex, 6-5. Senior Erica Miller and freshman Aly Cappaert each drove in two runs in the win, Miller’s runs breaking the Iowa State RBI record.
With one out in the bottom of the third, Miller lined a double out to center, scoring Iowa State’s first run of the game and cutting into Drake’s 2-0 lead. She would plate the winning run for the Cyclones with a sac fly in the sixth, bringing her career RBI total to 136, two more than any other Cyclone.
Trailing 5-4 in the fifth, Cappaert unloaded for a pinch-hit home run, the first home run of her career, giving Iowa State a 5-4 lead heading into the sixth inning.
After Mille put Iowa State up, 6-4, Drake attempted a seventh-inning rally, getting a run off Laura Brewer’s two-out triple but it would not be enough as Tori Torrescano (9-8) completed her ninth game of the season, allowing five runs, three earned, on nine hits while walking four and fanning six.
Reliever Rebekah Schmidt (9-8) took the loss after two and two-thirds innings of work in the circle. Schmidt was charged with two hits, three runs, two earned and one walk while striking out four.
The Bulldogs scored two unearned runs in the top of the third on a double to straightaway center off the bat of Nicole Randel to take a 2-0 lead.
Miller’s double cut the Bulldog lead in half before Torrescano (walk) and Maddie Reese (bunt single) reached to load the bases for Sara Davison. Davison worked a five-pitch walk to drive in the tying run and Jorden Spendlove put the Cyclones on top with a fielder’s choice to short.
Iowa State threatened to extend its lead in the fourth, putting runners at second and third with one out but Schmidt entered in to face Miller and Torrescano and the sophomore secured the final two outs without allowing a run.
Three singles started off the Drake half of the fifth and Hayley Nybo drove in the tying run with a sacrifice fly to center. Two batters later, the Bulldogs pulled ahead on a bases-loaded walk to Brewer, but the lead was short-lived as Cappaert retook the lead for the Cyclones with a two-out home run to center for the 5-4 edge the home team would not relinquish.
The Cyclones and Bulldogs complete their home-and-home season series Wednesday, April 10, at Drake. First pitch is set for 4 p.m. CDT.
