Three top-10s Pace Golfers to Runner-up Finish
COLUMBIA, Mo.—The Iowa State men’s golf team fired a final-round-low 280 this afternoon to finish second at the Columbia Regional Preview. The Cyclones were 8-under as a team today thanks to a 66 from freshman Ruben Sondjaja and a 68 by junior All-American Scott Fernandez. The Cyclones carded a three-round 857 total, five shots behind team champion Missouri. Austin Peay placed third, 13 shots behind ISU at 870.
ISU’s 857 tally is the 12th-best 54-hole team score in school history.
Sondjaja was one of many contributors for the Cyclones this afternoon. The Australian native carded a 6-under 66 that was sparked by three birdies and an eagle on the back nine. Sondjaja finished with a tournament total of 214 (74-74-66), which tied him with teammate and fellow true freshman Nick Voke in a tie for sixth place. Voke, who shot rounds of 68-73-73, has placed in the top-10 in both of his tournaments as a Cyclone. It was Sondjaja’s first top-10 finish.
Fernandez led all Cyclones by placing fourth in the medalist race en route to his 15th career top-10 finish. The All-American shot a 68 in the final round this morning for a three-round 211 (73-70-68) total.
Junior Sam Daley shot a 1-over 73 to close out the tournament. Daley tied for 15th at 218 (77-68-73).
It marks the first time since the 2012 Hawkeye Invitational where the Cyclones had three players finish in the top-10.
The Cyclones will be back in action on September 23rd at the VCU Shootout.
