LAWRENCE, Kan. – Game two of the series between Iowa State and Kansas went to the Jayhawks Saturday afternoon at Arrocha Ballpark as KU defeated the Cyclones 10-3. The loss dropped ISU to 23-30-1 overall, 2-15 in the Big 12. Kansas is 32-21 overall, 5-11 in conference play.

Long Ball Puts Kansas Ahead
The Jayhawks led off the bottom of the second with a walk from Chanin Naudin. Two batters later, Taylor Hatfield took a 1-1 pitch off Paris Imholz and hit a big home run over the wall in right-center to give Kansas an early 2-0 advantage.

ISU Misses Opportunity
The Cyclones were given a chance to get right back into the game as Liana Henry and Brittany Gomez led off the top of the third with back-to-back infield singles. Sarah Hawryluk reached on a fielder’s choice that saw Henry get out at third. Then during Lexi Slater’s at-bat, a wild pitch allowed Gomez and Hawryluk to each move up a base. However, Slater popped up and Rachel Hartman grounded out to kill the rally with two in scoring position.

Iowa State Gets on the Board
The Cyclones finally broke their duck in the fifth inning, and again it was Henry starting the rally. The senior got her second hit of the game with a double to the wall in left-center. KU decided to walk Gomez, who had been 5-for-5 in the series up to that point to bring up Hawryluk.

Hawryluk fired one through the left side of the Kansas infield to score Henry and reduce the Kansas lead to 2-1 with a double and Gomez on third.

However, once again ISU missed the opportunity to bring home more runs from scoring position as Slater popped up and Hartman struck out to end the inning.

Another Kansas Home Run
The Jayhawks got back to work in the bottom of the fifth. Lily Behrmann posted a one-out single and set the stage for Chaley Brickey, who hit her 11th home run of the season just fair to left to make it 4-1 Kansas.

The Jayhawks would then load the bases without a hit as Maddie Stein reached on an error, Harli Ridling got hit by a pitch and Taylor Hatfield walked. Pinch hitter Taylor Dodson was hit by a pitch to bring home Stein and make it 5-1, but KU would leave the bases loaded as Taylor McElhaney popped out to end the inning.

Davison Powers ISU Back
Aly Cappaert led off the Iowa State sixth with her second hit of the day with a base hit up the middle. Two batters later, Sara Davison reduced the Kansas lead to 5-3 with a 2-run home run to center field. It was Davison’s fourth home run of the season.

Records Watch
Brittany Gomez went 2-for-3 on the day with two singles and she drew a walk. That puts her season hits total to 75, only two away from tying and three away from breaking ISU’s single-season hits record of 77 set by Jenny Condon in 1988. Today’s effort improved Gomez’s season batting average to .405, putting her in position to be the first Cyclone to hit over .400 since Mary Jo Collins in 1978.

Sarah Hawryluk’s two hits on the day moves her up to 60 hits on the season, the seventh 60-hit season in ISU history. Gomez and Hawryluk become the first teammates in school history to each record at least 60 hits in a season.

On Deck
Iowa State closes its season out tomorrow with the final game of the series against Kansas at noon.
