Swimming and Diving Sign Two For 2013-14 Season
Ames, Iowa- The Iowa State swimming and diving team announced Thursday morning that swimmer Karyl Clarete from Winnipeg, MB, Canada and diver Julie Dickinson of West Des Moines, Iowa will be joining the 2013-14 swimming squad.
Clarete attended Grant Park High School and swam for Manta Swim Club under head coach Tom Hainey. The senior recently attended the World Championship Trials in Victoria in early April, where she placed 12th in the 400 freestyle and 20th in the 200 freestyle.
“Karyl was one of the top-three 18 and under swimmers in the country.” Sorenson said. “She has just improved tremendously and her times convert faster than our school record in the 500 free so we are pretty excited that she is coming here. She doesn’t have a lot of yard experience because in Canada they swim short course meters and long course meters but she has a lot of national experience. We are really excited about having her, we think she is a great fit and really fun person to be around.”
Dickinson attended Valley High School where she currently holds the 11-dive record and is a three time record holder at Des Moines Golf and Country Club. She also lettered all four years at Valley High School and earned First Team All-State honors both her junior and senior year. The West Des Moines native was captain of both the Valley Swimming and Diving team as well as the Valley Synchronized Swimming team.
“I think she is going to bring a lot of positivity to the team,” diving coach Jeff Warrick said. “I have worked with her at diving camps in the past and she has just been a very positive person and a good worker. She also is one of the top prospects in Iowa; she was top three at the state meet this year and also has shown strong dedication to diving in high school and also dove club so she will bring great work ethic to the squad.”
