ISU Men's Golf Adds Laws As An Assistant

AMES, Iowa – Iowa State head men’s golf coach Andrew Tank announced the addition of Peter Laws as an assistant coach to his staff. Laws brings a wealth of experience and success to the Cyclones as a competitor.

“I'm thrilled to have Peter join our program,” Tank said. “He is very familiar with the ingredients that make up a successful golf team from his days as a collegiate player at Kent State and member of the Canadian National Team.”

Laws, a native of Ontario, Canada, graduated from Kent State in 2005 after an illustrious career in which he was a three-time First-Team All Mid-American Conference selection. Laws capped off his time as a Golden Flash golfer by being named the MAC co-player of the year following his senior campaign. He was also named to the Canadian National Team and competed in the PGA Tour’s Canadian Open as an amateur.  

Laws then moved on to a professional career in which he tallied three tournament championships and 24 top-five finishes while playing on various tours, including the Gateway Tour (2006-2008), Canadian Tour (2008-2010) and Tour de las Americas (2011).

“Peter sees the game through the eyes of a player,” Tank said. “He has a tremendous amount of practical knowledge from his time as a touring professional to share with our players.”

“I'm excited about the opportunity to join the Cyclone golf program,” Laws said. “Iowa State is committed to becoming elite and I hope to help take the program to the next level. With the new practice facility and with the leadership of Coach Tank, the program is headed in a great direction.”

Iowa State will return one of the best collegiate golfers in the nation in junior Scott Fernandez. An All-American and Hogan Award watch list member, Fernandez broke several school records and gathered many honors in his outstanding 2012-13 season, including making the 2013 Palmer Cup and earning ISU Male Athlete of the Year honors.

• Three-time PING All-Midwest Region Team Selection
• Member of the Canadian National Team
• Competed in three NCAA Regional Championships and one NCAA Championships
• Competed in the 2003 Canadian Open on the PGA Tour
• Played in three U.S. Amateurs, one U.S. Junior, one British Amateur, and three Canadian Amateurs
• Competed in six PGA Tour Qualifying Tournaments advancing to second stage five times
• Three professional wins and 24 top five finishes on various tours
• Has been coached by Sean Foley, Darren May, Henry Brunton, Herb Page, and Marius Filmater
