MINNEAPOLIS, Minn. – Iowa State got a second-place finish from junior Ksenia Pronina and third-place finishes by freshmen Samantha Budai and Lydia Green as it wrapped up the final day of play at the Gopher Invite.

Pronina lost her first match of the fall season Sunday afternoon, dropping a three-set match to Minnesota’s Tereza Brichacova, 2-6, 6-3, 0-1 (5), in the finals of the “M” Flight, which was the tournament’s top flight. Pronina is 6-1 this fall with a first and second-place finish in the first two weekends of the season.

Budai earned a third-place finish of the “U’ Flight by defeating Minnesota’s Paula Rincon Otero in another hard-fought three-setter. The final score was 5-7, 6-4, 1-0 (10).

Budai’s fellow freshman Green took third in the Gopher flight with a default win against UNI’s Kylie Haviland. Green played an extra match Sunday and won in straight sets, 6-3, 6-0, against South Dakota State’s Tiffany Filipovich.

Sunday’s doubles action was highlighted by Green teaming up with fellow freshman Talisa Merchiers for an 8-4 win against North Dakota’s Sprinkel/Bennett in the Maroon Flight.

“I was pleased with our play this weekend,” head coach Armando Espinosa said. “Ksenia played well and I thought our freshman were pretty good as well. I think they are all improving and the competition was pretty good and we have to continue to get better. Overall, though, I was pretty happy, but there is still room for improvement.”

The Cyclones will be back in action next weekend at the UNI Invitational in Waterloo, Iowa.
