About the Iowa State Classic
The Iowa State Classic is the longest running track and field meet hosted by Iowa State University. The event has consistently produced NCAA qualifying performances, while attracting some of the nation’s top talent for over 20 years.
Last year, the event produced seven meet records and five facility records, as well as numerous NCAA-qualifying marks. On the men’s side, the middle-distance and distance events produced nearly one-fourth of the eventual NCAA-championship field. In the same events, the women’s competition produced 16-percent of the national qualifiers.
The marquee events of 2014 for both Men & Women are highlighted below…
Men’s 800m: Five Athletes sub-1:48.50 with Edward Kemboi’s winning time of 1:45.98 standing as the No. 1 performance in the NCAA. This race produced four of the top-nine times in the country with five of these athletes featured in the NCAA Championship.
Men’s 1 Mile: Seven Athletes sub-4:00 with Jordy Williamsz (3:56.84) and Matt Hillenbrand (3:57.00) producing the No. 3 and No. 4 times in the NCAA. This Mile was arguably the deepest of the 2014 Indoor Season with the top-five finishers shattering a 15-year-old meet record previously held by Stanford Olympian Michael Stember.
Men’s 5,000m: Nine Athletes sub-14:00 with Reed Connor (13:37.42) and Patrick Tiernan (13:37.73) producing the top-two times in the NCAA. They both broke a 12- year-old meet record previously held by Arkansas Olympian Alistair Cragg as the race produced three NCAA Qualifiers in total.
Women’s 800m: Five Athletes sub-2:05 with Ejiro Okoro’s third-place 2:03.91 standing as the No. 5 time in the NCAA. Collegians also produced three top-10 NCAA times and the race featured four from the NCAA Championship field. Phoebe Wright’s winning time of 2:03.39 broke SMU NCAA 800m Champion Tytti Reho’s 16-year-old meet record.
Women’s 1 Mile: Seven Athletes sub-4:40 with top collegian Allison Peare’s fourth-place 4:35.80 standing at what was then the No. 4 time in the NCAA. Jessica Tebo’s winning time of 4:34.73 established a new meet record surpassing Minnesota’s NCAA Runner-Up & USA Champion Gabrielle Anderson in the process.
This year’s edition of the ISU Classic is again slated to feature top-tier athletes from both the collegiate and professional ranks. The elevated level of individual and team competition will make the meet one of the nation’s best, as teams and individuals look to punch their tickets to Fayetteville, Arkansas, and qualify for the NCAA Championships, Mar. 13-14.
Meet information such as event entries, heat sheets, live results and Flocast will be updated continually, as the information and links are made available.
