AMES, Iowa - The United States Track and Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) named Iowa State junior Katy Moen as the Midwest Regional Women's Track Athlete of the Year. Moen put together a career season that was highlighted by a phenomenal postseason run to earn the award.

Moen burst into the national spotlight as one of the nation’s top distance runners in 2014, clocking personal records in each of her regular season races. The Fairbank, Iowa, native posted a mark of 15:56.53 in the Mt. SAC Relays’ 5,000m and followed that performance with a 33:56.80 in the 10,000m at the Stanford Invitational.

With the times, Moen became the fifth Cyclone in program history to run a sub-16 minute 5K and a sub-34 minute 10K. Moen now ranks at No. 6 on Iowa State’s all-time 5K list and No. 7 on the 10K list. She also posted a PR of 4:22.51 in the Payton Jordan 1,500m to rank No. 8 in program history.

Entering the postseason, Moen competed in both the 5,000m and 10,000m at the Big 12 Championships. The Cyclone notched 20 team points at the conference championships, becoming the second in program history to win both the 5,000m and 10,000m in the same conference championship event.

Moen kept the momentum rolling at the NCAA West Preliminaries, where she went on to win the 10,000m to mark her third victory in as many races. She then came back two days later to earn her second NCAA championship-qualifying mark in the 5,000m, taking third in her heat.

Moen is just one of five student-athletes to qualify for both the 5,000m and 10,000m at this year’s NCAA Outdoor Track and Field Championships. She is seeded at No. 10 in the 10K field and No. 22 in the 5K.

Each of the regions, which are the same as those used during the Division I cross country season, honored both genders’ top track athletes and field athletes and the top men’s and women’s head coaches and assistant coaches. Award winners were determined by a vote of USTFCCCA member coaches.
