WATERLOO, Iowa – Waterloo is wrestling country. New Iowa State wrestling coach Kevin Jackson was the first speaker Tuesday on the Iowa State Tailgate Tour stop at the National Cattle Congress. The Cyclone head coach didn’t disappoint the largest crowd yet on the tour.

“Waterloo is like a second home to me,” Jackson said. “When I came to ISU for my senior season, Bill Tate, Stuart Carter and Mike VanArsdale took me in and treated me like family.”

Jackson had transferred to Iowa State for the 1986-87 season. Head coach Jim Gibbons eased his transition.

“Jim took Kevin and encouraged him and made him feel like he was a part of our team from the start and we did too,” Tate said. “Jim made him captain and he was a great leader. We had previously met at national tournaments while in high school. If you wanted to know what a special person Kevin is, you need to know that he was our captain despite being here for one year.”

With Jackson as captain, Iowa State cruised to the 1987 NCAA team title in College Park, Md.

Carter won a national title that season and VanArsdale the following year. The ties between teammates remain strong.

“Stewart and I work very close to here and Mike comes back as well,” Tate said.

Jackson told the crowd he needed them in Hilton Coliseum for the Dec. 6 wrestling meet against Iowa.

“You can all stay at my house,” Jackson said.

Jackson is out to ensure that Hilton Coliseum is his team’s house all season.

The final tailgate tour stop is Wednesday in Ottumwa.
