AMES, Iowa - Gary and Paula Vanderley, residents of Ankeny, Iowa have been members of the Cyclone Club for the last three decades. Currently they are donors at the Captains Club level and attend games regularly. We sat down with Gary and asked a few questions about his best Cyclone memories.

Q: Why did you decide to join the Cyclone Club?

A: "It was progression for me and my wife, as we’ve been lifetime Cyclone fans. As our kids grew up and attended ISU we wanted to give back to the University and also to the athletics program."

Q: When did you attend your first Cyclone athletic event?

A: "It would have been the very first game played in what is now called Jack Trice Stadium in 1975. I remember sitting in the student section, we played Air Force and we beat them. My first basketball memory was when I brought a bunch of friends down from Marshalltown and we got to see Johnny Orr’s first game that he coached in 1980."

Q: What was your most memorable game as a Cyclone Fan?

A: "There is not really one that stands out, but just watching Johnny Orr’s teams of the 1980’s was fun in itself. My wife and I have been long-time attendees of the conference basketball tournament down in Kansas City. There were so many good games we got to see, and not just with Iowa State on the court. Beating Kansas was always a great time in the tournament, because both of our teams would fill up the stands and make the most noise. One more memorable game was when we went up to Minneapolis for the Sweet Sixteen game in 1986 and beat Michigan."

Q: What were some of your favorite Cyclone road trips?

A: "My wife and I have been on the road a lot for games, we’ve attended almost all of the men’s basketball games in the Big Eight, Big 12, and NCAA Tournament. I remember going to Minneapolis to watch Larry Eustachy’s team win the first two games in the 2000 NCAA Tournament. I didn’t think I would ever get hooked on women’s basketball games, but Bill Fennelly has done a terrific job since he started here. My wife and I have made the trips to see the women play ever since we became season-ticket holders seven years ago."

Q: Who were your favorite players and coaches throughout the years?

A: "In football it would have to be both of the Davis brothers Troy and Darren. In basketball I loved watching Fred Hoiberg, Jamaal Tinsley, and Marcus Fizer. Marcus was so good and he wasn’t scared of anyone. I really wish he would have stayed around for all four years."

"As far as coaches went, I really enjoyed Dan McCarney and the way he brought our team up from where we used to be. I am really happy with what Jamie Pollard is doing here, and I think we are going in the right direction. But Johnny Orr tops my list of all-time favorite coaches. I remember attending a golf outing in Marshalltown, Johnny and Governor Terry Branstad were there. There was a time when both of them came back to the clubhouse and about a dozen kids come running over to greet them. You would think that the kids would be running to Iowa’s governor, but they all came over to see Johnny. He spoke later that night about it at the banquet and had everybody laughing their hearts out."

"One other memory of Johnny was when he called out Dick Vitale on the air on ESPN. 'Dickie V' asked coach if his team deserved to go to the tournament, and Johnny came back and mentioned that he had killed Vitale when he was coaching at Detroit. I remember just laughing and seeing Justus Thigpen rolling on the ground in excitement."
