Swimming and Diving Knock Off South Dakota

VERMILLION, S.D. – The Iowa State swimming and diving team collected 11 wins in the 16 events competed Friday en route to a 179-118 win over South Dakota Friday night at the Dakota Dome.

The meet served as a rebound meet for several Cyclones who missed last weekends races in Illinois with illness. Lindsey Behrens collected wins in the 200 medley relay and 50 free and Jenny Vondenkamp picked up wins in the 200 back and 800 free.

“It was good to see Behrens up and racing and she did outstanding anchoring our relay,” Iowa State head coach Duane Sorenson said. “Jenny knocked off the pool record and was racing the clock in the 800 free.”

Along with Vondenkamp’s 800 free time, Nan Liu set a pool record in the 100 back.

Jeli Nixt also earned a victory in her return, winning the 100 breast, and Marley Suckow continued her early season success with wins in the 200 breast and the breaststroke leg of the 200 medley relay.

“Jeli did a really good job in her relay and 100 breaststroke,” Sorenson said. “It was good to get her back with the team and in the pool.”

Also collecting individual victories on the night was Abby Glaser in the 100 butterfly, Hannah McCulley in the 200 butterfly and Frances Calzada in the 100 free.

Tien Tran and Sarah Nelson swept the top two spots in both events Friday night. Tran took first place on both boards with a 275.20 on 1-meter and 307.50 on 3-meter. Tran’s 3-meter score is a new pool record at the Dakota Dome.

The Cyclones are back in the pool tomorrow at South Dakota State. The meet kicks off at 1 p.m.
