Jeff Warrick, who came to ISU in 1998, is in his 12th season as Iowa State’s head diving coach. Six of his divers have earned a total of 13 all-Big 12 honors including Hillary Nichols, who won a Big 12 Championship on platform at the 2005 meet.
In 2008-09, Tien Tran was one of four Big 12 divers to collect All-Big 12 honors on all three boards. Tran earned fourth place finishes on 1-meter and 3-meter and dove to a fifth place finish on platform. Tran also broke the school-record on the 3-meter board against Nebraska-Omaha, taking down Katie Grinnell's school record which stood for 15 seasons.
Warrick has coached 24 Cyclone men’s and women’s divers to the NCAA Zone Diving Championships. Tran is a three-time participant.
Tran garnered a sixth-place finish in the platform competition, ninth in the 3-meter and 11th in the 1-meter. Fryklund had a high finish of 11th in the platform.
In 2005, Nichols finished fifth on the platform, seventh on the 3-meter and eighth on the 1-meter board to become the first Cyclone diver to qualify for the NCAA Swimming and Diving Championships since Janet Lahti in 1987. She finished 33rd on the 1-meter and 25th on both the 3-meter and platform.
Warrick came to Iowa State following three years as the head diving coach at West High School in Davenport, Iowa. From 1995-97, he coached several Falcon divers to the state meet, including the third-place finisher at the 1997 state championships. He also taught math classes at West High.
Warrick, who also served as co-coach of the Bettendorf Diving Club from 1996-98, received his bachelor’s degree in secondary mathematics education from Indiana University in 1994. While at Indiana, he was a member of the Hoosiers’ diving team. As a diver he was a three-time Big Ten finalist, a qualifier for the 1992 NCAA Diving Championships, a participant in the 1994 Olympic Sports Festival and a finalist at the 1994 United States Senior Outdoor Championships.
In 1992, he earned honorable mention All-America recognition on the platform and was bestowed with the Jack D. Tichenor Award that recognizes the Indiana student-athlete earning the highest grade-point average.
At Indiana, Warrick not only excelled on the diving board, but also in the classroom. He was named a GTE/CoSIDA Academic All-American in 1992, a three-time Scholastic Achievement Award recipient and earned the Big Ten Scholar-Athlete Award three times.
During his time at Indiana, Warrick also worked with divers in the summer season at the Indiana Diving Academy in Bloomington, Ind., from 1990-95.
Warrick and his wife, Kathy, reside in Ames with their daughter, Elyse (12), and son, Ean (8).
