PALO ALTO, Calif. -- Iowa State three-time All-American Lisa Koll raced to the American Collegiate 10,000-meter record Friday night, winning the race at the Stanford Invitational in 32:11.13. The Fort Dodge, Iowa native's mark broke the previous record of 32:19.97 set by Alicia Craig of Stanford in 2004. The collegiate record is 31:56.72 by Kenya's Sally Kipyego for Texas Tech in 2007. Cyclone Grace Kemmey was 15th in a personal best and NCAA Championship qualifying 33:59.70.
"Unbelievable," Iowa State head track coach Corey Ihmels said. "We set out to run 78-second laps with the goal of running 32:30. But with 10 laps left (Koll) looked at me and we said 'lets go.' She passed (Blake Russell/Reebok) and was still impatient and ran around (Magdlena Lewy) Boulet.
Russell was second in 32:14.91 and Boulet third.
Koll, a sophomore, was shocked by her performance and how good she felt the entire race.
"Halfway through, I felt fine and was pacing myself behind Blake (Russell)," Koll said. "I was really relaxed. With about two miles to go I looked at coach (Ihmels) and we decided to go for it. I sped up the laps, to 75 and 76 and with 800 (meters) left I heard on the PA that 32:19 was the American Collegiate record. I guess the last lap was 73. I'm amazed. I am confident and the longer the race the more comfortable I am. Because I was comfortable I could run those fast laps. I am waiting for someone to pinch me."
Hilary Bor of Iowa State ran a personal best 14:03.45 to finish 10th in the men's 5,000-meters.
