Ray Wehde was a star player on one of Iowa State’s greatest basketball teams in 1944. A native of Holstein, Iowa, Wehde is one of just 13 basketball players in ISU history to earn multiple first-team all-league honors. Wehde also holds the distinction of being the first Cyclone to be drafted into the NBA and the first ISU freshman to lead the team in scoring.

Highlights:
- One of 13 players in ISU men’s basketball history to earn first-team all-conference honors two or more times (1944 & 1947)
- Earned First-Team All-Big Six honors in 1944, helping the Cyclones win the Big Six title and advance to their only Final Four NCAA appearance
- Led ISU in scoring in three of his four seasons, including his freshman year in 1943, becoming the first ISU rookie in school history to do so
- Earned First-Team All-Big Six accolades in 1947, averaging 8.3 ppg
- Was an All-American in track & field, finishing fourth in the 120-yard hurdles at the 1944 NCAA Meet
- Became the first Cyclone drafted by the National Basketball Association (NBA), getting picked by the Boston Celtics in 1948
