AMES, Iowa - Winning on the field and on the court has translated to record merchandise sales for the Iowa State Athletics Department.
"Our competitive success, especially this past year in football and basketball, has certainly raised our institution's national profile," Director of Athletics Jamie Pollard said. "With a higher profile, there is a greater likelihood for athletics department logoed merchandise to appear in more stores."
Pollard noted that is a significant change from the past.
"One of the most often asked question I received during my first several years at Iowa State was 'where can I find Cyclone gear," Pollard said. "Those questions have decreased considerably in recent years as we've had more success. Victories have translated to a greater presence on store shelves."
According to figures shared by the Licensing Resource Group, the Cyclones' licensing partner, Iowa State registered a school-record $1.055 million in net royalties last year, the first time the institution has topped the one million mark in royalties. That was an increase of nearly 25% from 2010 and was the ninth straight quarter the institution's royalties have increased.
Iowa State was the only school in the nation that earned home victories over nationally ranked Top 5 programs in both football (Oklahoma State) and men's basketball (Kansas) in 2010-11.
"It's those types of signature victories that boost our institution's national brand," Pollard said. "Stores across the nation, obviously, feature merchandise from the prominent and more successful schools. Our record-breaking royalty figures are proof that Iowa State is trending upwards."
