Samuel "S.W." Beyer was the Dean of Industrial Science at Iowa State in the early 1900s, but it was his love and interest in Iowa State athletics which endeared him to many. Beyer served as Iowa State's first de facto athletics director (1896-1908) and was the school's first faculty representative for athletics. Beyer was a key figure in the formation of the Missouri Valley Conference, Iowa State's first athletic affiliation, and the National Intercollegiate Athletic Association, an organization that evolved into the NCAA. He served as vice-chairman of the NIAA/NCAA for 25 years and helped spearhead construction of both State Gymnasium and Clyde Williams Field. He is also credited with instituting the tradition of "Homecoming" in 1912, a concept to bring back alumni for a football game each year.
