AMES, Iowa- The Iowa State track and field team takes action Friday through Sunday at the Big 12 Championships in Waco, TX.  The meet kicks off Friday with the men’s 100-meter dash section of the decathlon starting at noon CDT.  It resumes Saturday starting with the men’s 110-meter hurdles section on the decathlon at 10 a.m. The final day of the meet starts at 11 a.m. on Sunday with the men’s javelin throw.

“This is an exciting week with the Big 12 Championships,” head coach Corey Ihmels said. “ We are scattered all throughout the country during the spring and finally come together for this weekend.  It’s exciting for all of our groups.  I thought that we had a strong showing on both sides at the indoor’s. The women had a tremendous indoor meet and our men we’re solid. We are in a good place and all look forward to competing.”

The Cyclone women, who finished third in the Big 12 Indoor Championships, are currently ranked 16th nationally according to the ustfccca rankings are led by star runner Betsy Saina.  Last week at the Payton Jordan Invite Saina ran the third fastest time ever run by a collegiate woman in the 10,000-meter run with a time of 31:37.22.

“She’s a seasoned vet,” Ihmels said. “I think Betsy is going to roll with the punches and be ready to roll when conference rolls around. It was fun to see her run well, but I think she has her sights set on bigger and better things down the road so she’ll be ready to roll.”

The Iowa State men are led by Nick Efkamp, who won the individual 400-meter dash title at the 2012-13 Big 12 Indoor Championships.

“One of our champions indoors was Nick Efkamp,” Ihmels said. “I think that he is going to continue to roll.  He has had a good spring and he’ll be ready to go this weekend on the stage on the Big 12’s.”

The Cyclones won the women’s 4x1600-meter relay and the women’s 400-meter hurdles last week at the Drake Relays and look to build off that at the Big 12 Championships.

“Winning at the Drake relays is a great confidence booster for the athletes that we’re able to come out on top,” Ihmels said. “Any time you win whether it’s a small duel meet or a meet as big as the Drake relays it’s a positive thing.  I think those kids are going to have a lot of confidence coming off that meet. It won’t do anything but positives for them.”

Results will be posted on cyclones.com at the conclusion of each day’s events.
