Doug Fitzjarrell was a five-time All-American and national champion gymnast on two Iowa State NCAA Championship teams (1973 and 1974). A native of Colorado Springs, Colo., Fitzjarrell earned All-America honors in the floor exercise at the 1973 NCAA Championship, helping the Cyclones win their second NCAA team title in three seasons. As a senior in 1974, Fitzjarrell recorded one of the finest seasons in Iowa State gymnastics history. The Cyclone  star won four Big Eight titles (all-around, floor exercise, vault, parallel bars) and was an All-American in all four events at the 1974 NCAA Championship. Fitzjarrell was the national champion in the floor exercise with a score of 19.125, aiding the Cyclones to their second consecutive NCAA team title. He was one of six finalists for the 1974 Nissen Award, given annually to the nation’s best gymnast. Fitzjarrell was named Iowa State’s Athlete of the Year (1974) and represented the United States at the South African Cup (1974) and Moscow Invitational (1975) after graduation.
