AMES, Iowa – Iowa State softball players Brittany Gomez and Erica Miller have been named to the College Sports Madness All-Big 12 Second Team, the website has announced. Both student-athletes earned All-Big 12 honors from the league office last week.
This is the second College Sports Madness nod for Miller who was named to the top team in 2012. Gomez earned her first career postseason honor last week, named to the second team All-Big 12; Miller was named to the first team by the Big 12 coaches for the second-straight season.
Gomez, a freshman from New Braunfels, Texas, led the Cyclones in Big 12 play this season with a .350 average, followed closely by Miller’s .349 hitting clip. Gomez’s 21 hits in conference contests led Iowa State and all Big 12 freshmen, as did her seven stolen bases. The speedy Gomez finished the season having swiped 31 bags and scored 50 runs, both Iowa State records, and broke program freshman records for average and hits.
Miller, a native of Pomona, Calif., closed out her Cyclone career with a team-high on-base percentage of .481 in league play while collecting 18 extra-base hits and slugging .512. The two-time NFCA All-Midwest Region selection broke school records in both single-season RBI (52) and career RBI (149) while tying fellow senior Tori Torrescano with the most walks in a single season (29). Her election to the All-Big 12 First Team last week capped an illustrious career in which Miller became the second Cyclone to ever hit .300-plus against Big 12 opponents in multiple seasons and the lone Iowa State softball player to post double-digit hitting streaks in back-to-back years.
