AMES, Iowa – Iowa State golfer Zach Steffen finished first in a field of 18 participants to earn a spot at the U.S. Amateur Publinks Championship, Monday. Steffen shot rounds of 67-69 to finish 6-under at the Otter Creek Golf Course in Ankeny. The USGA Amateur Publinks will be held at the Laurel Hill Golf Club in Lorton, Va, July 10-15.
The Publinks Championship consists of 36 qualifying holes of stroke play before match play. Over the years, the tournament has altered styles of play including different combinations of stroke and match play. The event has featured marquee golfers such as Brandt Snedeker, Jason Dufner and 2008 Masters champion Trevor Immelman.
Steffen, who will be a senior next year, is one of 156 finalists competing for 64 spots in match play.
Steffen competed in seven tournaments this season for the Cyclones. The Des Moines, Iowa, native compiled a 76.35 stroke average, and is fresh off a runner-up finish at the Des Moines City Championship.
