AMES, Iowa – Iowa State cross country and track and field head coach Martin Smith announced the hiring of Will Palmer as an assistant coach Tuesday. Palmer previously worked under Smith at Oklahoma.
At Oklahoma, Palmer served as the director of operations where he was responsible for team travel logistics, home meet management, managing communication between the track and field staff and other athletics offices for the Sooners.
“Will has a very strong work ethic,” Smith said. “He is very passionate about his work and sees it as an extension of a lifestyle, which is very important in track and cross country where you don’t have much of an offseason.”
Before his time in Norman, Okla., Palmer interned with the United States Track and Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA). Palmer also worked with Robert Chapman at a coaching internship with Team Indiana Elite, where he oversaw daily workouts in preparation for the World Indoor Championships.
Palmer was a member of the men's cross country and track & field teams at Williams College, where he focused on the 1500m and 3000m steeplechase. He graduated with a bachelor’s degree in mathematics in June 2011.
